Vocational Education to Reduce Migration and Exploitation

The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators (DMI) is a women-led religious congregation founded in India in 1984. With a mission to empower the most vulnerable—especially women, children, and youth—DMI runs development programs across education, vocational training, agriculture, and community organizing.

In the Diocese of Nagpur, DMI has been serving over 5,000 families since 2016 through initiatives that build self-reliance and dignity. Their work in Tumsar reaches 17 marginalized communities, providing tools and opportunities for long-term transformation. In Danapur, Bihar—a state marked by high unemployment and economic vulnerability—DMI has been serving marginalized and tribal communities since 2016. Many youth and women in this area face limited access to employment and are at increased risk of trafficking and exploitation due to a lack of vocational skills.

To combat this, DMI seeks support to establish a vocational training center in Danapur that will serve 180 youth each year. This center will offer structured courses in tailoring, beautician services, and catering, helping young people develop employable skills and secure dignified livelihoods. The center will be fully equipped with training tools, materials, and a locally relevant curriculum, offering a pathway to independence and resilience for the most at-risk.
