DMI Agro-farming Shelter for Children
Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) is a religious organization that has been serving Africa since 2003, dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities through various initiatives. Since 2011, the DMI-Spring Hope Rehabilitation Center in Kibamba, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has been a haven for girls aged 14-23 who have survived human trafficking. Over 900 girls have been successfully reintegrated into their families and communities, equipped with vocational skills in beauty, tailoring, office work, and catering.
In 2022, to expand its impact and address ongoing challenges, DMI established 25 acres of farmland in Visiga. This farmland serves as a critical resource, enabling survivors to gain knowledge and skills in sustainable farming and livestock management while also supporting the costs of the rehabilitation center. However, the lack of nearby housing has limited the effectiveness of this initiative.
To overcome this, DMI plans to construct a shelter on the farmland, capable of accommodating 20 beneficiaries at a time for six months. This shelter will provide a safe and supportive environment where up to 40 survivors annually can receive training in farming, ensuring they have the tools needed for self-sufficiency and contributing to the long-term sustainability of the rehabilitation center. The local government has pledged to contribute to this project, reinforcing the impact and success of this crucial initiative.
