Resettlement and Economic Empowerment for South Sudan’s Displaced

The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators (SDMIC) has operated in South Sudan since 2012, delivering programs in education, food security, peacebuilding, and IDP support. Now entering a new phase of its 2021–2025 country strategy, SDMIC plans to expand to Malakal to serve communities returning after years of displacement. Malakal remains deeply affected by years of conflict and forced displacement. Today, over 33,000 individuals remain in the UN-managed Protection of Civilian (PoC) site, while another 27,000 have returned to the town and surrounding areas. The peace remains fragile—recent outbreaks of violence serve as reminders of ongoing risks.

However, Wau Shilluk and Kodok Payams have emerged as safer areas where families are beginning to rebuild. This project targets those communities as key sites for recovery and resettlement.

SDMIC’s strategy is grounded in the belief that sustainable livelihoods will accelerate resettlement. The intervention will begin in Wau Shilluk and expand to Kodok as resources allow. Core components include:

  • Community-managed institutions to promote peace, accountability, and long-term self-governance (e.g., savings and credit groups, farmer associations, youth clubs)

  • Sustainable livelihood development: agriculture, aquaculture, and off-farm income generation to ensure food and economic security

  • Micro-irrigation and water access using river-based systems to promote year-round farming and clean drinking water

  • Pilot micro-grid electrification to improve quality of life and enable small enterprises

  • Resettlement support through one-time relief and recovery actions such as:

    • Cash-for-work and food-for-work for land reclamation

    • Construction of temporary shelters, schools, clinics, and public spaces

    • Provision of farming inputs, learning materials, and medical outreach

    • Teacher training and child protection services
