Economic Empowerment for Women in Sex Work

In Chipata District, many women face extreme poverty, lack of education, and limited employment options—factors that push them into high-risk occupations such as sex work. Female sex workers (FSWs) in this region are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unplanned pregnancies, and gender-based violence. With an estimated HIV prevalence of 56.4% among sex workers, the need for targeted, supportive intervention is urgent.

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI), with a longstanding presence in Zambia, is launching a 12-month initiative to support 50 female sex workers in transitioning toward safe, sustainable livelihoods. The project will provide comprehensive training in entrepreneurship and climate-resilient agriculture, enabling participants to start small businesses and cultivate food for income and nutrition. In addition, land access and tools will be secured to support their agricultural efforts.

To improve health outcomes, the program will also deliver targeted HIV/AIDS education and organize mobile health camps offering testing, counseling, and awareness activities. Public campaigns and events will reach 2,500 local residents, aiming to reduce stigma and promote safer practices. The inclusion of community leaders and health professionals will help strengthen local support systems and create a more inclusive environment for FSWs.

By the end of the project, participating women will be equipped with practical skills, stable income sources, and better access to healthcare. Many will transition fully away from sex work, gain confidence in community spaces, and play an active role in family and financial decision-making. The broader community will benefit from improved awareness and a healthier, more supportive environment. Budget Overview
