Project Overview

Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities and Support for Trafficking Survivors

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) is a religious congregation that has worked in Tanzania since 2011 to combat human trafficking through rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts. Over the years, DMI has operated a short-stay home and a vocational rehabilitation center, successfully reintegrating over 840 trafficked girls. After reintegration, many join Alumni Associations established in six Tanzanian regions, including Dar es Salaam, allowing them to maintain social ties, receive ongoing support, and participate in leadership trainings.

While 60% of DMI alumni have found entry-level jobs, fewer than 5% have launched small businesses—often due to lack of capital, business knowledge, and mentorship. Many of those who attempted entrepreneurship experienced a 40% failure rate, citing poor market understanding, inadequate record-keeping, and blurred lines between business and personal spending.

To address these gaps, DMI proposes the creation of an Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) specifically designed for alumni in Dar es Salaam. The center will offer:

  • A 60-hour entrepreneurship training module for 270 young women
  • A Start-up Loan Fund to provide soft loans based on approved business plans
  • Ongoing business mentorship and site visits for one year
  • The formation of 10 neighborhood savings and support groups (200 alumni total), fostering peer accountability and collective growth

By equipping alumni with practical tools and structured financial backing, the project will help survivors become successful entrepreneurs—reducing long-term economic vulnerability and contributing to their lasting freedom.

Support Survivors on the Path to Self-Sufficiency

Your donation will help trafficking survivors build their own businesses, access capital, and gain the confidence and skills to support themselves and their families with dignity. Let’s turn resilience into opportunity—together.

This project establishes an Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) to support trafficked young women in Tanzania with tailored business training, start-up capital, and mentorship. Building on DMI’s successful aftercare programs, the EDC addresses long-term economic vulnerability and empowers survivors to achieve financial independence through sustainable small businesses.
